It is believed that the city of Buffalo was named after nearby Buffalo creek.  Though it is possible that the American Bison’s (Buffalo) historic range did include Western New York, it is unclear whether or not the creek was named after the animal.  (Wikipedia)

Nickel City, Queen City, City of no Illusions, City of good neighbors, BuffWing town (I made that one up) are some of the nicknames you will often hear in the media.  Each nickname has a story of its origin but there are other books that can do a better job of explaining that than I can.

I love Buffalo! It has a lot more to offer than just The wings. Though it often gets a bad rap.  I think this is mostly due to its economic downturn and the fact that nature occasionally dumps a ridiculous amount of snow and, when it does, it’s all over the news.

Due to the commerce brought with the arrival of the Erie Canal, Right after New York City, Buffalo was once the second-largest city in the USA.  When the St. Lawrence Seaway (https://www.history.com/topics/landmarks/erie-canal) opened in 1959 traffic on the Erie canal ended and local economies including buffalo suffered. Today, Boustead by the new medical complex buffalo is experiencing a renaissance after the long recession.

For a long time, Buffalo has been America’s best-kept secret and only now are people starting to realize it. With the opening of the new medical complex and revitalization of the waterfront, people are now flocking to it.  

If you are considering relocation, real estate is on the low end compared to other cities and it’s a safe investment for the future.  As the world warms it is north so can handle a temperature increase and lake Erie is a massive body of fresh water that isn’t going anywhere soon.  Other draws include its nightlife, affordable housing, close to Canada, Toronto, many other great cities, wings, what else could you want. If you do want more, here is a shortlist of things that make Buffalo Awesome.

  1. New Development: new riverfront/ harbor/ downtown renovation, new medical campus, Olmsted parks restoration and new development, Frank Lloyd wright houses
  2. Food: There is lots of good food to get.  From 4am greasy takeout to fine dining, if you are looking for it, it’s here and it’s good.  There are many local foods you should try in addition to Buffalo Wings. Beeg on wick, Sponge Candy, Rosas Loganberry, caveats BBQ to name a few.  Be sure to ask about butter lambs from the Broadway market for easter and fish fry is a big deal at most restaurants on Fridays.
  3. Sports: Buffalo has many professional sports teams, Buffalo Bills for the NFL, Sabres for the NHL, Bisons are our minor league baseball team and the Buffalo Braves used to be our NBA team but they left Buffalo in 1978.  In addition we have many university teams, some of which are NCAA and hobby teams including lacrosse, soccer, tennis, hockey,

Outdoor opportunities: When friends would visit buffalo for the first time they were always surprised by how beautiful it was.  Unlike many western towns, there are trees and lush vegetation everywhere you look. Bike Paths (good and getting better), state parks, water sports, beaches, skiing, Niagara Falls and much more. Buffalo Zoo.
